The modern internet is dominated by a handful of corporations and is vulnerable to censorship and invasions of privacy. Peer-to-peer and blockchain-based protocols enable a truly decentralized internet and puts individuals back in control of their data and identity. 

‘Own the Internet' is a hackathon that enables developers to build the next generation of decentralized applications. We invite all developers — regardless of whether you are a beginner or a web3 expert — to join us on this journey and build truly open source and censorship-resistant apps on Skynet and Handshake. 

Skynet is a platform for developing and hosting decentralized web applications. Skynet lets you host files and apps across multiple peers with redundancy, making them effectively permanent and censorship-resistant and empowering developers and users. Check out the Skynet AppStore to explore content and applications built on Skynet. Skynet is the application layer built on Sia - the high-performance decentralized storage infrastructure. 

Handshake is a Proof-of-Work protocol like Bitcoin, except unlike Bitcoin where you only use the coins as money, Handshake coins (HNS) are also used to register names on the Handshake blockchain. Handshake names are top-level domain names (.com, .net, .org) but unlike traditional domain names that you can only rent, you truly own your Handshake names forever, which no one can take from you nor prevent others from accessing. And rather than being limited to renting from a small number of extensions like .com and .org, you can own and use almost any extension you can think of, including ones with Chinese characters, Russian characters, and even emojis! 

The 'Own the Internet' hackathon offers an interactive and rewarding experience for developers with many resources provided including tutorials, mentorship, a chance to meet the co-founders of the event’s sponsors, and an opportunity to showcase your project to a wider community. And of course, prizes! Up to 1,200,000 SC and 40,000 HNS (~ $8,000) are up for grabs. Moreover, every project that uses Skynet and/or Handshake will be eligible for participation prizes and an exclusive 'Own the Internet' T-shirt.

• How many people can be on a team?
• Teams can range in size from 1 - 5, but we don't recommend any bigger than that for a hackathon. Find some old or new friends and get hacking!
• Who will be judging?
• The Sia and Namebase teams will be judging this hackathon.
• Who owns the right to project submissions?
• The hackers!
• How many bounties and which one should I submit my project to?
• In total, there are three bounties in this Hackathon. Bounty 1 is for projects that build on both Skynet and Handshake. Bounty 2 is for Skynet only projects and Bounty 3 is for Handshake only projects. Submit your project to the bounty based on the tech you use.
